Award winning Floral Trail helps bring £1.2 million to improve King’s Heath

Judges from Heart of England in Bloom have been so impressed by the King’s Heath Floral Trail that they have given it a top category award. And businesses in King’s Heath have been so impressed that they have just voted to become a Business Improvement District that could raise up to £1.2 million to improve the shopping centre over the next five years.

The circular Floral Trail was created for the first time this summer and links up the shopping centre with the surrounding King’s Heath and Highbury Parks.

The trail consists of:-

  • magnificent baskets on the railings by the Queensbridge traffic lights at the entry to the shopping centre
  • hanging baskets on every lamppost on the High Street and Vicarage Road
  • new plant tubs on the High Street
  • wall baskets adorning the library and other buildings and
  • new bedding displays, hanging baskets and flower towers

in King’s Heath Park .
Walking round the trail will help people achieve the 10,000 steps health experts recommend and a leaflet showing the route of the trail can be picked up at the library, community centre and local shops.

Judges from Heart of England in Bloom were so impressed that they awarded the trail a “merit” in the neighbourhood awards section in only it’s first year and recommended that it should be entered into the main competition next year.

The trail has been organised by the recently created King’s Heath Centre Partnership that brings together the Business Association, Neighbourhood Forum, individual residents, councillors and council officials. One of the aims in creating the trail was to demonstrate to local businesses the benefits of voting to become a Business Improvement District and they have now done so. This will raise £600,000 over the next five years with a third of the money earmarked for further environmental improvements. If match funding can be obtained, the total money available to improve King’s Heath could rise to £1.2 million

Bob Prew, chair of the Partnership’s Floral Trail Steering Group, said “The Floral Trail has demonstrated that it is possible to improve the appearance of the shopping centre. It has produced a real feel-good factor and will be made even bigger and better next year ”.

Graham Kay, BID facilitator, said “The Floral Trail is just the start of major improvements to ensure that King’s Heath remains the biggest and best shopping centre in South Birmingham”
