Future Plans

No floral enhancement existed in King’s Heath before this year (2007)

The Floral Trail has begun to introduce a real “feel-good” factor into the shopping centre.

But much more needs to be done before King’s Heath can claim to be a vibrant urban village.

Future plans include:

    • more permanent floral displays along
    • - the existing route
    • - Alcester Road South
    • - side roads off the High Street
  • improving the Dad’s Lane / Avenue Road part of the route
    • a Floral Trail Competition with prizes for:
      • best residential front garden
      • best shop display
      • best pub display etc.
  • finding a permanent solution to the graffiti above the former Powerhouse store
  • involvement of schools and younger people in general
  • promoting a sense of civic pride in order to try and reduce litter, graffiti and ant-social behaviour
  • the preparation of a comprehensive design brief for the shopping centre.

Aims

Central King’s Heath now falls within the top 25% most deprived parts of the country according to the 2001 census.

Two years ago parts of it were also devastated by a tornado that started in King’s Heath and swept through South Birmingham.

Bringing about change is also made more difficult because central King’s Heath is divided into two different council wards in two different constituencies.

The Floral Trail, therefore, aims to:

  • make the shopping centre more attractive to residents, visitors and potential investors.
  • demonstrate to businesses the benefits of voting to become a Business Improvement District (BID) and
  • promote healthy exercise by encouraging people to walk round the trail which roughly equates to the 10,000 steps health experts recommend everyone takes each day.

The decision to enter the Floral Trail into the Neighbourhood Awards section of Heart of England in Bloom was not made until a relatively late stage in it’s development.
